One thing every blogger needs to be aware of is that there is no such thing as "unlimited" bandwidth or disk space.
If you have been searching for a web hosting provider, we are sure you must have come across companies who promise to offer unlimited bandwidth or unlimited disk space. Many companies advertise this in such a way to attract customers. This is a marketing strategy. Unlimited disk space or bandwidth technically doesn't exist. Therefore, this is just a marketing ploy followed by many medium scale web hosting providers.
The Technical Proof
Have you ever heard about unlimited hard disk capacity for a PC or laptop? Certainly not! It can never happen. Hence, web hosting providers cannot offer you unlimited disk space too. Why? Because all our web data are hosted in a hardware similar to a hard disk drive of your PC or laptop. It is limited.
The same thing holds true for unlimited bandwidth. Our Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide us with an internet connection. These ISPs help us connect to the internet. As we visit our blog, we connect with our web hosting provider that caters the data of our blog. Now, as we connect, we consume bandwidth. Every time we visit our blog, the web host downloads the files needed for us to see our blogs in our browsers. Each file has different sizes ranging from a kilobyte to gigabytes.
Example, if one person visits your blog with a collective size of 500MB, then it deducts 500MB on your bandwidth. If 1000 people visit your blog, then that is 1000 x 500MB, that is 500,000MB, roughly 500GB of bandwidth! Well, what if you have more? The only commercial web server I know that can offer the biggest bandwidth can only be measured in terabytes (if you came across a petabyte, please let me know). So if this happens, I am sure any web hosting provider will suspend your blog for taking up too much server resources (similar to RAM on your PC or mobile phone). This can be an exaggerated calculation. But the point is, unlimited technically doesn't exist.
If you are really interested in knowing the truth if web hosting providers can really provide you with unlimited space and bandwidth, you can try availing one and check it for yourself. Try uploading monster files with sizes around gigabytes in size. For example, upload a Linux OS iso file or any other personal videos which are legal to share. This can really suck a huge amount of disk space and then share the download link with your friends or publish it in your blog. This consumes heavy bandwidth when people start downloading these files. In no time your account gets suspended by your web hosting provider. You can even be considered a spammer or someone who try to abuse the servers for overloading it because you consume too much server resources.
The Technical Truth
There is no such thing as unlimited space or bandwidth. No web host can ever offer unlimited bandwidth or disk space. What they can truly offer when they say "unlimited" is an unmetered hosting with limited server resources. They allow you to consume as much disk space or bandwidth, but it should be under constraints of the allowable server resources.
The Technical Conclusion
When you get suspended, you did not violate the thing they call unlimited. But your account gets suspended because of that fine print you agreed upon before you bought your unlimited web hosting account. That is going over the limit on the server resources your web hosting provides.
So the next time you buy a web hosting package, don't just go over the highlighted portion of the sales page but also the fine print that you "tick" to agree upon before ordering and paying.
